Time and level

A unit should be around 45 minutes however, with proper worksheets it can last up to 90 minutes.


The levels are mainly a tools to know where the students are compare to where they should be. 


If we put an age to every level, compared to native speaker it will look like this;


level 1 - 3 years old

level 2 - 4 years old

level 3 - 5 years old

level 4 - 5 years old

level 5 - 6 years old


When those level are mastered, we will concentrate our effort to reach the official international level of A1/A2. (7-9 years old)


Once level A2 is achieved, the instruction for KET,PET and FCE can begin.


After completion of the FCE, the students can progress toward the CAE and conclude with the CPE.


Students who follow this process should be able to score above 7 on the IELTS.

Can a student be to old?

The answer is no. However, he will have to learn the same content as level 1 to 5. The only difference is the way that the content will be delivered to the students. It can be an adult or a kid, it makes no difference since the base has to be learned in order to progress properly. The older is the student, the faster he will progress true the levels since the attention span will be better.


The main objective in this case is the bring the student where he should be, age-level related.

Discipline

Discipline should be taught at home and not at school. In a perfect world the students should not disturb the classroom. However, it is not the case. The is two phenomena in our current situation that happen. 


The public institution, which doesn't rely on private funding can deal more easily with problematic students since they can simply be put out of the classroom. This method his ideal since to don't slow down everyone else progress for one student. Contacting the parents and explaining that the student won't be able to attend class until his behavior is rectified should be done as soon as possible.


The private institution, they are more tricky to deal with since they rely on private funding. The suggested method was to put the disturbing students in a different classroom, but often, the lack of staff doesn't make it possible. You want to keep your customers happy, but you also want the class being able to learn properly. 


Scenario: A student disturb the entire classroom, the parents have been contacted and said it's normal at this age and won't do anything about the student behavior.

Because of that one student, the nine others won't be able to learn properly, the other parents won't be satisfied with the school performance and leave.

It is better to loose one than nine in that case. 

However, many unqualified manager/director won't understand this part and often you will have to manage it at your level. The suggestion we had was, use those students and give them something to do, keep them busy. 


Worksheet

Worksheets are very important and should never be left apart. They should be a review of the current unit. Some worksheet  can also be used the review other units or other levels before an evaluation. A proper worksheet should always include:

writing

reading comprehension

listening comprehension



Homework

Homework are crucial in the learning process. the sad truth is, the more, the better. But the quality should always preside over quantity.

Homework should be in two parts:


The current unit and the following unit to prepare the students and make the learning process more efficient.


Phonics/Reading/Speaking

Phonics should be focused on as soon as possible. Phonics should be focused on every lesson, including reading and speaking.


Every class should includes the new phonics and a review of the other one.


We want to bring the students to read and understand as soon a possible.
